During these dark and dreary days of January in the north, people often take to wood carving, or painting, or quilting, or in some instances, writing. Last week, in a brief moment between snowstorms he found a piece of paper and a pencil and scribbled the following (I include only a portion of his rendering). He gave me permission to inc

To hear Milwaukee coach Lane Lambert dissect rookie center Nick Spaling, you’d think there was a major gaffe in his designation. Surely, Spaling can’t be a first-year AHL’er. The word “mature” permeates Lambert’s scouting report like …

Besides, the political crime ring that brought federal prosecutors to Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich’s doorstep has tentacles that reach into Wisconsin. Nick Hurtgen, a former top aide to Tommy Thompson, is a central figure in the Illinois drama. He was indicted f

Because of the fact that I write recaps on both the Wisconsin Badgers and the Marquette Golden Eagles, I wasn’t really sure what to do with the headline. But when I thought about the game between the two teams on Saturday, I came to the conclusion that while Marquette did rally for a pretty nice comeback, this was ultimately a game that was blown by the Badgers. The Badgers lead for most of the game, but when it came down to it, they just couldn’t contain Jerel McNeal. McNeal hit a 3-pointer wi

JOHN FUND ON THE TRAIL NOVEMBER 4, 2008 Milwaukee Puts a Vote-Fraud Cop Out of Business Local Democrats don’t take the issue seriously. By JOHN FUND Last week Mike Sandvick, head of the Milwaukee Police Department’s five-man Special Investigative Unit, was told by superiors not to send anyone to polling places on Election Day. He was also told his unit — which wrote the book on how fraud could subvert the vote in his hometown — would be disbanded. “We know what to look for,” he told me, “an

As I noted at last Tuesday’s Common Council meeting, Circuit City plans to close 20 percent of their stores. Today the company made the news official and put out a list of stores that will close. Only one Wisconsin location (in Milwaukee) is scheduled to close. The Grand Chute location will remain open, but Gannett’s coverage (Associated Press) includes this ominous statement: Circuit City also said it will further reduce new store openings and plans to work with landlords to renegotiate leases
